2011: Arab
Neuroscientists 6th Annual Meeting:
was held at the Society for Neuroscience 2011 Meeting in Washington, DC. Sunday, Nov 13, 2011
6:30-7:30pm
Washington Convention Center, Room 209A Washington, DC, USA
SfAN recently celebrated our 6th Annual Arab Neuroscientists Social, a formal social at the Society for Neuroscience's annual meeting. In November 2011, we met in Washington DC with an attendance of 50 members at our social, and 30 members attending the dinner afterwards at the Busboys and Poets restaurant. This year SfAN proudly provided a travel award competition titled the "Dr. Raniyah Ramadan Young Arab Neuroscientist Travel Award". Travel award applications were scored by a panel of nation-wide expert senior neuroscientists. This travel award is a generous contribution from the Dr. Raniyah Ramadan Foundation and will be an annual SfAN award to recognize excellence and innovation among rising young Arab Neuroscientists. The award was presented by Dr. Tawfik Ramadan and his wife, Mrs. Siham Ramadan, the parents of Dr. Raniyah Ramadan. The travel award recipient was Dr. Mohammad Herzallah for his contributions to understanding the neural mechanisms of Depression, and for his on-the-grounds efforts in building the Cognitive Neuroscience Lab at Al-Quds University in Palestine.
Another highlight from our event was a short presentation and update by Dr. Pierre Magistretti, Vice President and Secretary General of The International Brain Research Organization (IBRO) and Dr. Carlos Belmonte, President of IBRO on many of the activities IBRO is currently doing in the Middle East. They expressed support for our organizing efforts, debriefed us on the IBRO course and conference that was held in the United Arab Emirates in Feb 2011, and mentioned upcoming projects in Tunisia, Jordan and Lebanon.
Fellow member Arab Neuroscientists shared their projects towards promoting neuroscience in the Arab World. Dr. Hilal Lashuel debriefed us on the launching of the Society for the Advancement of Science in Technology in the Arab World (SASTA). We also heard from Dr. Mohammed Herzallah on the Neuroscience Palestinian initiative at Al Quds University.
SfAN’s 6th Annual Arab Neuroscientists social event was covered by a journalist from L'Orient Le Jour, a lebanese news outlet. The article is currently in press and a link will be posted to the ArabNeuroscientists website upon publication.
SfAN was also acknowledged by Nature Publishing Group at the Neuroscience meeting and sent complimentary gifts to SfAN members as a promotion for their Nature Middle East initiative. Copies of the recent issue of Nature were also distributed to SfAN members.
In other outreach efforts and future collaborative initiatives, members of the organizing committee met with program coordinators at the National Academy of Sciences headquarters in Washington DC.
We thank you for your continued support, and hope to continue growing with you over the next few years, both in numbers and accomplishments.
On behalf of the Organizing committee,
Hibah Awwad, Ph.D. and Yasmine El Shamayleh, Ph.D.

2010: Arab
Neuroscientists 5th Annual Meeting:
was held at the Society for Neuroscience 2010 Meeting in San Diego, California. Sunday, Nov 14, 2010
6:30-8:30pm
San Diego Marriott Hotel and Marina (Point Loma Room) 333 West Harbor Drive, San Diego, CA 92101
We would like to thank everyone who attended our 5th Annual Arab Neuroscientists Social at SfN 2010, as well as those who contributed generously to our event costs. We had a great turnout, and a lively discussion. We were also joined by two distinguished guests from the International Brain Research Organization (IBRO): President Dr. Carlos Belmonte and Secretary General Dr. Pierre Magistretti. Both expressed strong interest in expanding IBRO's programming in the Middle East, and in collaborating with the Society for Arab Neuroscientists.
To this end, IBRO is sponsoring a Neuroscience School and Conference in the United Arab Emirates in February 2011. We also heard from members of the organizing committee, Dr. Hilal Lashuel and Dr. Omar El-Agnaf, about the logistics of the course and how our group can participate. Detailed information regarding this exciting initiative can be accessed through this link.
We also formed a core group of active members that will be dedicated to moving the organization forward in the next year. This will include major restructuring of the website to support communication between members and the dissemination of relevant information, as well as brainstorming for events that we can carry out throughout the year (not only at SfN). If you would like to join the organizing committee, please email: info@arabneuroscientists.org
Again - thank you all for your continued support. It is extremely satisfying to know that after 5 years of founding this group, we are continuing to gain momentum, and that we are finally ready to set our plans into action.
Best wishes,
Yasmine El-Shamayleh, PhD
